 What Is a Heat Pump?

http://ts3.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=1339747343290&id=503f4ce81b9bfdf70d39de99fb3e6cbc

For me a heat pump is a very useful machine that moves heat from one place with a lower temperature to another place with a higher temperature. It pulls in cold air, heating it up, and then pumps it to an area that we want. What I like on a heat pump, is that it can obtain its heat source from air, ground or water, making it very versatile.

The great thing about heat pumps is that it can be used for both cooling and heating purposes, unlike air conditioners which are used only for cooling. It uses the same refrigeration cycle for cooling and heating. Another thing that I like is its reverse valve; a heat pump is able to offer the reverse operation during warmer periods which will pull the warm air out of the desired area to make it cooler.

Consumer Reviews of SEARS heat pumps

Here’s what I found out on heat pumps, particularly at Sears. There are 44 of 57 brands of heat pumps that are popular, 14% of customers recommend them.

One costumer of sears which is located at Clare, Michigan is very satisfied of the product. The costumer said, “The heat pump I purchased about 3 years ago came at a great price and a useful buy. The biggest difference in this product was the simplicity of installation and assembly. A mechanic I am not but i seemed to manage just fine. Three years into this pump and I have had no issues. It’s a good piece of equipment for a good price.”

The following costumers are not satisfied for various reasons. Here are the things I’ve found out from them:

According to Craig Johnston who owned a heat pump for 2 years is very unsatisfied. Here’s what he said, “Since the unit was first installed a couple of years ago, it has been nothing but a loud, inefficient piece of junk. I had problems from the day it was installed. Had it completely replaced 3 months later. Sued Sears (and won) for the amount of time I had to be at home when the machine was serviced. The replacement unit is loud and inefficient and I’m having them come on site again to tell me why.”

Mr. Cadle who owned 5 years was also very unsatisfied. The reviews stated that he was Devastated about Kenmore heat and cooling product. Here’s what he said, “ever since I bought this unit I have been having problems. Sears replaced all duct work after 5 years of complaining. Within 5 yrs they always had to repair something. Over all I have been frustrated with this particular product for not getting hot or cold enough. I never had a full year of satisfaction with this unit. I will like a replacement unit at this time. 10/18/09. As of this date product is still not working properly.”

Another costumer Nell G. McMakin who lives at Belton, SC, was also very unsatisfied. He owned a heat pump for two years and concluded that it was a real disappointment.  “A piece of junk!!!” he said, “For 18 months, this unit will not cool when it hot, and will not heat when it is cold. I have had service people out here at least 8 times and it is still not right. The first mistake they made was to disconnect the heat strips. Therefore, when it is really cold, there is no second source of heat to bring up the temperature. I was even told by a service man that I did not need it in this part of the country. They did not install a complete new system. They used the existing duct work, circulation fan and electrical wiring. I have a piece of a Sears’s heat pump and it is not working.”

Mr. Peter E. Wilcox a resident of Spokane, WA is somewhat unsatisfied for his three years of ownership. He said, “Sears does not provide an owner’s manual with this unit, therefore I have no idea what to expect from it when operating as a heat pump. I don’t know what temperatures it will support or in what outside temperatures it should be used. I suspect it was oversold to me and is not appropriate for temperature conditions where I live.”

Consumer Reviews of LOWE’S heat pumps

http://ts4.mm.bing.net/images/thumbnail.aspx?q=1326948162271&id=a98478a3296a3fb54e80861bfd6b775e

Here are some negative feed backs that I found out from costumers.

A Frustrated customer from Maryland complained about a heat pump failure. “I purchased the unit in May of 2010 and in November of 2011 the Heat Pump Failure code went off. The unit comes with a 1 year labor and 10 parts warranty. So if I didn’t purchase an extended warranty (I did) I’d be footing a bill for labor. Heat pump failure appears to be a common issue for this unit, which is really annoying. I didn’t expect to be dealing with an issue just 1.5 years after the initial purchase. GE will send 3 parts and a technician will have to do the fixing. I am really disappointed and caution folks that are interested in purchasing the unit. Also, i just learned that Lowes no longer sells the unit, which is added caution for folks looking to buy. I have to note that before the failure all seemed to be working great. Even with the failure the unit now operates in another mode still providing us with heated water. Still, for a unit that costs so much money I as a consumer expected so much more. I wouldn’t recommend taking the risk to anyone!” the costumer said.

Another costumer said that, “Lowe’s DOES STILL sell the unit. It isn’t on the website any longer because they have ample stock in your local stores now. I specifically asked why it wasn’t available on the website. Sorry you had a bad experience.”

“Heat pump stopped working after 14 month of use” a costumer from Vancouver said. “Actual saving is not significant. I installed it in my garage. Price is too high. Low quality, not durable, hard to fix” he said.

A costumer from Texas stated that the product is too noisy. He said, “Do not buy if it is near any occupied areas. Fan and compressor sound is audible 30 feet away through a closed door! Called GE service and was told “if fans are running, sound is normal”. Also told they don’t have factory service in this area, nor would the service tech they recommend check for anything other than are the fans running and if so, it would be classified as “normal”. Unless Lowe’s responds to the issue, we will pull it out and return.”

Here are some positive feedbacks from the costumers

An HVAC Supervisor at Lexington, South Carolina said, “Installed a brand Carrier water source heat pump at my house in 2008. Has the hot water desuper heater option. Problem is, the desuper heater only increases the temperature to 80 – 95 in winter; so you have to supplement with expensive electric resistance heat. I purchased the Geo Spring (ON SALE! saved $500.00!) to use as the 2nd (final) tank working WITH my heat pump. By doing so, I maximize savings. In summer the first tank furnishes 106 degree water to the GE, in winter probably raises incoming cold water temperature 30 degrees which provides large capacity, faster recovery, and excellent economies. Note that the difference between temp off / temp on is 5 degrees. (Dead band) I do not know how it will hold up long term; does anyone? But it worked out of the box, draws 2 amps at 240 volts, and has a reasonable recovery rate in heat pump mode. When G.E. did the rollout and promotions in the spring, the promoters claimed that the Geo Spring used porcelain insulation, which if it is true, would indicate high quality.”

Last September 27, 2011 another costumer from Nottingham said “I have had this water heater for 18 months now and just had my first problem. The heat pump malfunctioned so it defaulted to standard heat. I called GE and even though I am past the 1-year labor warranty, they offered to pick up the bill. They are really standing behind their product. My electric bill has dropped significantly as well and I didn’t have to sacrifice comfort.”

Another costumer named Dani from Malibu, California said “We bought this water heater to save money on our electric bill – and it has saved us quite a bit. But none of the reviews mentioned how loud its fan is! Our garage is our bottom floor of the house, so we can hear this whirring all the time, no matter how much water we use.”

Home Humidifier Reviews: The Best Humidifer For Your House

Humidifier-An appliance that puts moisture into the air.

Sounds simple, and on one level, it certainly is. By raising the percentage of moisture in the air, there are health, home, and personal belonging advantages that will help keep you healthier, and prolong the life of your possessions.

There are many sound reasons to have an air humidifier in your home, in fact, many doctors recommend them, including the beloved Dr. Oz of daytime television, for improving better health conditions and is one of the leading reason consumers add them to their “must have” list.

That said, there are naturally considerations to evaluate before deciding which is right for you.  Here are a few of the reasons you should consider adding this appliance to your homes, along with the furnace and hot water heater. (Yes, its that important)

The basic types of humidifiers available are:

  1. Evaporative, also called cool mist. These are portable units, and can actually be made at home. Using a steel bowl filled with water and a fan that blows air over the waters surface. Not highly effective, it does indeed raise the humidity in a small room.
  2. Vaporizer, boils water which then permeates the room with steam.
  3. Ultrasonic, these guys vibrate a metal plate, causing water to form, which is then almost silently dispersed into the room/area. Very popular with both consumers and OUR TEAMS recommendation, they can be small and hardly noticeable, or you can opt for a larger model that has a larger reservoir for water.
  4. Forced air, also referred to as whole house. These are attached to your forced hot air furnace, and better regulate the humidity level by monitoring the level of water in the air, and regulating the outflow of vapor.

Though maybe not right for everyone, the humidifier with over BEST ratings was the Air-O-Swiss 7144. Available at most major retailers, Sears has this, and several other Air-O-Swiss products. This unit enjoys the most popular ratings among consumers who considered both portable, and whole home models.

Air O Swiss 7144 Digital

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Built-in humidistat, which measures the humidity in the room/area
  • Good moisture output
  • Sleek, attractive design
  • Easy touch controls
  • Produces cool or warm mist
Cons
  • May generate white dust, which is minerals from your water
  • Tank is hard to refill
  • Humidistat may not be accurate
  • Needs to be regularly cleaned to remove the mineral deposits

Now, speaking of pros/cons, though humidifiers have many benefits, there are some other considerations.

Remember that:

a. humidity over 50% will encourage dust mites, and additionally, potentially harmful mold spore growth.

b. minerals in the water you load into the humidifier will be emitted  into the air, and usually  leave a white film on furnishings and other objects. You can minimize this by using distilled water in your unit.

c. desired humidity levels changes with the outside temperatures. An easy to remember rule of thumb, as the air temperatures go down, the humidity in your home should go do

Check out this cute line of whimsical humidifiers your child will love!

Many doctors say that humidifiers are good for your health, no matter what. However, if you have allergies, they are even more desirable….here are just a few of the  reasons doctors like a humidifier in everyone’s home:
1. Proper humidity, around 30-40%, can help reduce the chance of infection.  Keeping the mucus membranes moist allows the tiny hairs in your nose to properly do their job. Reducing the chance of colds, flu, and other seasonal afflictions.
2. Prone to dry, achy sinuses? A well humidified bedroom will eliminate one major cause of this discomfort.

3. Humidifiers can relieve the intensity and NOISE LEVEL of snoring.

4. Cold symptoms are greatly relieved by using a humidifier.

5. Dry, itchy skin can be prevented, including chapped lips. (proper fluid intake must be maintained also)

6. Static electricity, that unpleasant tendency of a SHOCK when touching something, even your beloved pet, will be greatly reduced.

Okay, now that you are convinced,  lets consider some more of the nuts and bolts of buying THE BEST HUMIDIFIER available for you.

So, now that we understand that PROPER MOISTURE LEVELS are what will give you the benefits we’ve gone over, lets look at how much moisture your need to put in your home, and if you should do it room by room (with individual humidifiers for each) or opt for a model that will do the job for your whole home.
Kenmore 14gallon Evaporative Humidifier
This nice looking Kenmore has a large tank, a full 14 gallons! This is good for YOU because, although it can still only humidify a limited range, you will not need to fill the tank as often as with the smaller units.
Naturally, the whole house units are much pricier than individual units.
The Air O Swiss 7144, rated best by consumers, can be had for under $150, even at a major home retailer like Sears! (Absolutely no slur intended to Sears, they are one of my all time favorite providers of both appliances, and services)
Benefits of whole home humidification:
  • Daily cleaning is not required. (This can be a biggie if the alternative is 3 or 4 units in different rooms.)
  • Hardwood floors, furnishings, and upholstery will all have extended lives, cracked and dry wood eliminated like the static electricity.
  • Energy savings-you can lower the thermostat during cold months, as the proper humidity level will make the air feel warmer. Some estimates say you can save up to 4% on your heating bill!
  • Attached directly to your air and heating system, water is introduced to the air without adding minerals that potentially be harmful to your family’s respiratory systems.

So, our teams call on the whole home vs. portable humidifier?

Unless you have someone at home with serious medical issues that require a pristine humidity level, we go with the portables.

Attractive, and as the Kids models show, able to be very cute, they offer a low cost, easy to maintain option that will absolutely do the job!

What size Air Conditioner do I need?

Air conditioners, dehumidifiers and heaters  are the tools of civilization that allow we humans to live where on this earth we want to.  That said, lets take a look at what you need to know to get that all important A/C properly selected.

First of all, remember that air conditioners work by cooling the air, and also, by dehumidifying. That means they remove excess moisture in an area, and vent it to the outdoors. The removal of the moisture is one key element to making your living area a cool place to be.

There are a few considerations when you select your air conditioner, the major issue being, as I am sure you have suspected, the size of the area you want to keep cool.

If you have just purchased your home, chances are you know the square footage it contains; if not, or if the rooms you want to cover with your air conditioner are oddly shaped, separated by many hallways, or other oddities that homes tend to abound with, Use my handy guide to get your number.

Calculate the square footage of the area you want the unit to cool.

Do this by measuring the length, and then the width of each area (room)  Multiply them one by the other, and the result is your square footage for that room.

eg: Room measures 10 feet wide and 17 feet long. 10 x 17 = 170. Square feet needed to cool is 170.

If you are purchasing a unit to cool only one room, you only need to measure that room, obviously. Less obviously, you need to make note of the type of room it is. Bedroom? Bathroom? Kitchen? Living room loaded with electronics?  Is the room very sunny? If anything other than a not very sunny bedroom, add 10% to your result.

eg: 170 sq ft plus 10% = 187 sq ft

Measure each area/room/hall separately, being sure to record your results on your trusty partner, the handy pad. (with its partner, the handy pen)

If you are calculating need for an entire home, after obtaining all of your room, hallway and other areas (like closets that may remain open at most time) add the results of your square footage calculations together That final number is the square footage you need to cool.

OK now you are armed and ready to select the correct sized air conditioner for your home.

The power to cool in an a/c unit is expressed in BTU’s. (British thermal units) The more BTU’s, the higher the ability of the unit to cool, and also to remove excess moisture in the air.

Large Areas 1,900 2,200 27,000 – 28,500

There are several other factors to consider before purchasing the right sized air conditioner

Among them are:

  1. How well insulated is the room or the home? Well? Excellent? Hardly at all?
  2. How tall are the ceilings?
  3. How may windows are in the room/home? Not an exact count, simply are there a lot, or not?
  4. How much sun does the location get?
  5. If a SINGLE ROOM UNIT is your goal, is there an non insulated attic or under roof area directly above it?
  6. How many occupants does the area usually accommodate? People = heat
OK, one final tip before I set you off on your measuring adventure. You may be tempted to over buy your air conditioner, thinking that if it is bigger than the square footage and other considerations require, it will cool better.
This is NOT THE CASE WITH AIR CONDITIONERS.
Here’s why, remember way back in the beginning of this article I mentioned that air conditioners both cooled and removed moisture? Well, if you purchase a unit to large for your area, it will quickly remove moisture in the air, and shut the unit off before it has cooled your room(s).

Dehumidifier Reviews And Ratings!

Finding the best reviewed dehumidifier for your home just got far easier. For those of us who need to understand the need, here are some facts:

One out of five Americans suffer from allergies. Dry air minimizes dust, which is an aggressive irritant for this population.  EVERYONE has an enclosed space in their home that gets little to no light, Mold begins to grow at about 60% humidity in the air.  Mold is a destructive, living organism that left alone, will at a minimum cause property damage, and at its worst, harm the health of those living in that home.

The United States Department of Environmental Protection measure a dehumidifiers efficiency by how many liters of water will be removed from the air in an hour. Which means the number you will see indicated for each model you consider, is that capacity.

As with almost all modern appliance, that prestigious governmental organization has tested many models, and issued the world renowned Energy Star  dehumidifier rating for those that meet their stringent standards.

Mold, both visible and not, is a leading cause of home damage that has the potential to affect your health, and cause structural damage to your building. Mold is natural, being a type of fungus that thrives on moist conditions.

Spores, tiny microscopic ‘seeds’, can be found virtually everywhere, including in homes, and are a part of the general dust found in homes.  These spores can grow on building materials and furnishings if conditions are correct.

Excess moisture is the critical factor in any indoor mold problem.  Eventually, the moisture and mold will damage what it is growing on, which may include both the building materials and personal belongings.  The key to preventing mold growth is to prevent moisture. The best defense is to have one of the many best reviewed rated home dehumidifiers

in position before there is a problem to correct.

More: There are units that can fit into any decor, note the Santa Fe models.

These units pay for themselves in areas that have been stricken by flooding.

Some homes have areas needing dehumidifying that do not have the room for even one of the compact or portable models previously mentioned. In actual fact, those areas are even more in need of help from the best reviewed dehumidifiers. Those designed with the space requirements in mind are compact, rugged, and will help in removing that excess humidity.

Also, dehumidifiers can help remediate damage caused by flooding. Those living in areas prone to those unhappy events, or even victims of a natural disaster such as the recent hurricanes in north America, will find the savings found by speedily removing excess moisture from their home and its contents more than sufficient motivation for the investment.

Crawl space dehumidifiers

Good: Compact, rugged, very efficient. Low noise.

Bad: Some do not have casters, and can be difficult to position in a tight spot.

More: These powerhouses can sometimes remove moisture from the crawl space AND basement.

  • To sum up, some of the features you should look for while comparing these Best Rated Dehumidifiers to your needs are these:  So, in summary, here are some features to look for when you are comparing reviewed dehumidifiers and how well they meet YOUR NEEDSAutomatic shut off when pre-set humidity level is reached
  • Variable fan speed
  • On/Off switch – this may sound silly, but not all of the units have them
  • Low noise level
  • Automatic shut off related to frost level in the unit
  • Auto shut off when the water storage tray is full, or better still, a continuous drainage system that requires no maintenance at all. These usually require a floor level drain in the room that they will be used, but if that option is available to you it will save a lot of time and effort in the long run.
  • Wheels
  • What kind of filtration? If you or someone living in your home is an allergy sufferer, find one of the models that will remove moisture, but not get to dry. (dust thrives in dry areas)
  • Be aware of what kind of upkeep your filter will require. Some are an easy hand wash, dry and re-install, others may need to be periodically replaced.

Portable Air Conditioner Reviews

Portable air conditioners. As a symbol of civilization, air conditioning appliances are topped only by the toilet. Lifesavers both literally and figuratively, there are areas in our country that remain forever uninhabitable if we don’t make the atmosphere breathable. That said, let’s take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly side of these modern conveniences..

GOOD - They roll from room to room! Most are also dehumidifiers, and many can also be used as space heaters when the need arises. Relatively small, most have an 18” to 30” footprint, and they come with a nice range of btu’s sufficient to work in small, medium and large areas.
BAD - Consumer ratings I’ve reviewed state that though the units will cool a room enough to make the area bearable, they do not give that icy chill a lot prefer. They will take the heat out sufficiently for you to sleep somewhat comfortably, but that is about it.
UGLY - They’re “fussy”. Water needs to be drained from the unit regularly, usually a pan or bucket will have to be removed and dumped periodically. Like daily. Hot air needs to be vented outside, which means out a window using the provided hose and foam or plastic inserts included with it. (inserts go around the hose at the window to create a seal.)

  •  8,000 BTU 150 square feet
  • 10,000 BTU 250 square feet
  • 12,000 BTU 350 square feet
  • 14,000 BTU 450 square feet

Air conditioner sizes are expressed in a certain number of BTU’s (British Temperature Unit). A BTU is the amount of energy required to cool or heat one pound of water, one degree. You just need to know how big your room in, in square feet. So measure length and multiply it by width, then divide the result the result is your rooms size. If your room is L shaped, break the areas into blocks, calculate the square footage of each, and add them together.
Before you begin your shopping, remember that air conditioners are power hungry, and if not designed with a keen eye on conservation, you can easily triple your consumption. Most models I’ve listed here have been rated by Energy Star, and are a good choice for energy savings.

Okay, let’s start with the Portable Air Conditioner that received the overall BEST reviewsfrom consumers on consumersearch.com:

MobilComfort KY-80 8,000 BTU Portable Evaporative AC and Dehumidifier

compact, modern appearance and clean lines

http://www.amazon.com/MobilComfort-KY-80-Portable-Evaporative-Dehumidifier/dp/B003E8GG3U

It is reported to be decently quiet, (noise can be a consideration with these items) has directional louvers that move, effective, and comes with a remote. You can purchase it through Amazon.com!
Sears has a very nice selection of Portable Air Conditioners, after I narrowed the search results by “Energy Star” to save you some time, I found 3 sizes available, enough BTU variation for most homes. Check out their offerings here:

Solaris Air 8000

This is the Soleus Air 8,000 BTU
Evaporative Air model, 4 ½ stars , available at Sears

Another of my favorite retailers, Home Depot, DID NOT have any units  that carried the Energy Star Rating, HOWEVER, each of the top three most popular models had manufacturers warranties of a year from date of purchase. This is far better than the average 90 day warranty that is common, and will give you the opportunity to be sure the product functions as well in year 2, as it did when you first bought it. HD also offers extended warranties through their own special services department, for a price. Check them out at

Finally, Best Buy, another appliance superstar carried only one Energy Star model, however It is a perfect mid capacity unit, can also function as a space heater, and is made by Frigidaire, which is a good omen if I’ve ever seen one! See it here:

Fridgidaire portable air conditioner

I am forced to put this unit in last place because they have NO CONSUMER REVIEWS available as yet.  Only time will tell its ability, but Fridgidaire has been an industry leader for many years, and I have a good feeling about this relatively low priced model.

So, armed with information to help you speak the language, the best advice I can give in addition is to do your comparison shopping AT HOME, narrow the field of selection,
Then hit the stores to find the absolute best deal! Be well, enjoy life!
